Understanding the anatomy of hair
Hair loss is something that can affect up to 80% of men and 50% of women to varying degrees. More commonly known by names such as male pattern baldness or a receding hairline, Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) can affect both genders.
In hair follicles affected, dihydrotestosterone binds to the androgen receptor which transforms larger terminal follicles into miniaturised version, leading to thinning of the hair, patchy coverage and receding hairlines.

Leading causes of hair loss include:
Genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) – the most common cause in both men and women.

Your hair type can also have
an impact
Your hair type and the condition of your hair may also influence the rate of loss. For example those with damaged hair, curly hair may experience greater loss, whilst those from Afro-Caribbean ancestry may have a lower risk.

Telogen effluvium (TE)
TE is an abnormal shedding condition which usually exceed a loss of 30-150 hairs per day. This is often a temporary condition triggered by a range of things such as childbirth, medication or trauma.
We will not recommend treatment if you have TE, and will advise that we wait until the condition has stabilised before proceeding with any treatment.
Telogen Effluvium (TE) is a common form of temporary hair loss that occurs when an increased number of hair follicles enter the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle. This leads to excessive hair shedding, usually becoming noticeable 2–3 months after a physical or emotional stressor. Unlike male or female pattern hair loss, Telogen Effluvium does not typically cause permanent damage to hair follicles and is often reversible. Common Causes Telogen Effluvium may be triggered by: Significant emotional stress Illness, infection, or high fever Surgery or hospitalisation Rapid weight loss or restrictive dieting Iron, vitamin D, zinc, or protein deficiency Childbirth (postpartum hair loss) Hormonal or thyroid disorders Certain medications How Long Does It Last? Acute Telogen Effluvium usually resolves within 3–6 months once the trigger is addressed. Chronic Telogen Effluvium (CTE) persists for more than 6 months and may continue for years if underlying factors remain untreated. Treatment Treatment focuses on identifying and correcting the underlying cause. This may include: Correcting nutritional deficiencies Managing thyroid or hormonal imbalances Stress management Optimising diet and overall health Medical therapies where appropriate Recovery Most patients begin to see reduced shedding within a few months after treatment of the underlying cause. New growth typically becomes visible within 3–6 months, with significant improvement in density occurring over 6–12 months. Full recovery may take up to 18 months. Hair Transplant and Telogen Effluvium A hair transplant is not usually recommended during active Telogen Effluvium because the condition is often reversible and ongoing shedding may affect results. However, in carefully selected patients with Chronic Telogen Effluvium, particularly when thinning has remained stable and medical treatments have not restored satisfactory density, hair transplantation may be considered. It can also be beneficial when Telogen Effluvium coexists with male or female pattern hair loss. A specialist assessment is essential to determine whether the condition has stabilised and whether a hair transplant is an appropriate option for restoring hair density and improving appearance.
