The procedure
What is FUE
Hair Transplant Surgery?
FUE — Follicular Unit Excision — is the gold standard in hair restoration. It moves your own permanent hair follicles from a donor area (usually the back and sides of the scalp) to the areas where hair has thinned or been lost. Because the hair is entirely your own, the results look and feel completely natural — and they last a lifetime.
Unlike older techniques, FUE leaves no linear scar. Recovery is comfortable, downtime is minimal, and most patients are back to normal life within a few days. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic in a single day, or across two sessions for more extensive treatments.
At HairMD London, we offer two placement approaches. Our surgeon will recommend the right choice for you at consultation based on your hair type, the area being treated, and the result you are looking for.
Shaving isn’t required making it perfect for long hair, women’s hair, and Afro hair. You also won’t need a hair band, so it’s less restrictive for daily activities and more discreet. The procedure is minimally invasive and performed under local anaesthetic, keeping you comfortable, with minimal discomfort, and fully awake. Depending on the extent of hair loss, the surgery may take one or two days, with each session lasting 5–6 hours. There’s no overnight stay, and you’ll head home the same day with an aftercare package.

The Process
Stage 1 - extraction
Follicles are being taken one by one from the back of your head. This is done in a sparse, random order to ensure no bald patches or linear scars are left behind. The equipment we use is a robotic micro-punch that targets multiple strand follicles, minimising graft damage.
During the extraction the harvested follicles are placed immediately into a special solution and kept cold (around - 2-8°C). This protects the grafts and gives an improved survival rate of 90-98%.
Stage 2 - implantation
Once the desired number of grafts have been harvested they are categorised into small groups of follicular units and are prepared for implantation.
The donated follicles will be carefully loaded one by one into the implanter pen allowing immediate implantation into the scalp. This stage is also done under local anaesthetic by skilled surgeon with years of experience.
Stage 3 - aftercare
To help insure maximum survival of the graft and your total satisfaction, we ensure to give every patient a thorough aftercare service. This will include check-up appointments and aftercare products.
