Understanding the stages
of hair loss and scale

Surgeon assessing hair loss on patient

We recognise that every woman's experience with hair loss is unique. The Ludwig Scale, a widely acknowledged measure for female pattern baldness, has been pivotal in helping to understand and categorise hair thinning in women. We've updated our visual guide to include a broader range of stages, offering a more nuanced approach to classification.

female hair loss scale

• Stage I-1 to I-3. Often a milder degree of thinning which mainly affects the part line.

• Stage I-4. This introduces thinning which can extend past the part line, but is mainly the mid-scalp area.

• Stage II-1 to II-2. A moderate level of hair loss which is more noticeable.

Widening scalp visibility and reduced volume.

• Stage III-1 to III-2: Advanced hair thinning with more pronounced visibility throughout the top-scalp area.

• Frontal. Characterised by a receding hairline or thinning edges.

The Ludwig scale

For males, we utilise the Norwood-Hamilton scale to assess the stages of hair loss:

• Type 1. A typical head of hair with no loss.

• Type 2. Slight hairline recession.

• Type 3. More noticeable recession and an M-shaped hairline. Possible hair loss on the tempted and frontal area.

• Type 4. A more pronounced M shape with increased balding at the vertex.

• Type 5. Affecting a larger area than type 4, with the possibility of thinner hair overall. There is a further subtype which has more prominent frontal/temporal loss.

• Type 6. Extensive hair loss, including a larger bald spot on the crown and receding hairline.

• Type 7. The most advanced type, leaving a horseshoe-shaped pattern of hair along the sides and back.

Dr Feyroza explained the procedure, her plan, her idea for what I was after. She listened to what my expectations were and what I was looking to gain from the procedure. Not long after she had a template drawn for the hairline and we were both happy. During the procedure Dr Feyroza was great, ensuring I was ok. The procedure itself was almost pain free. On the whole the day was perfect, there is nothing I would change at all. I really couldn't recommend higher." Dr Feyroza explained the procedure, her plan, her idea for what I was after.
